As a journalist by profession I did a story on dog accessories which featured a white Miniature Poodle wearing a designer coat and pushing a pram and I had to have a Poodle. One is never enough and I was truly bitten by the Poodle bug.
I have been actively involved in the breeding and exhibiting of Miniature and Toy Poodles since 1960,
my first Poodle was a white Miniature who went oversize.
My next Miniature was black - "Ch Cumorah Czar" and my first champion Toy was silver, "Ch Cumorah Silver Lancer".
I imported seven Miniatures from the UK and was then devastated to find
they were all either positive to or carriers of PRA. This put a full stop to my breeding program.
I also bought two silver Toys from the UK Kennels which were too big to show here.
I continued with Toys from Mrs Vi Maddox (Cumorah) and had ordered a Miniature bitch from Marsden Kennels, however, due to cross communications I ended up with a Standard bitch "Ch Marsden Nina Simone" who I titled. Nina produced a litter which included three Best In Show winning Champions.
Due to a bad leg from a bout of Polio, showing Standards was too much for me and I decided to concentrate on the Toys. I could not find any that appealed to me here to continue my breeding program so I imported several from the USA. I selected dogs who would improve the breed here, however, as usual, some breeders who could have and should have benefited from these bloodlines chose not to take the opportunities presented to them. Those who did have been delighted with the results and all my Toy imports have become top producers.
Through a twist of fate I found a pair of Miniature Poodles from the Daktari Kennels in the USA who appealed to me and imported them. Then I was sent a dog to mate to their offspring. Although I didn't handle the Minis myself, the puppies were campaigned by friends in three States with wonderful results. A brown dog, SUPREME Ch Alamoana Kaluah N Cream co-owned and campaigned by Kylie Ritter in Queensland is a Top Producer and his offspring are big winners in the Showring at the present time.
I continue to be actively involved in all facets of the breed and continue to breed Toy Poodles which are being shown by friends. I write articles on all things Poodle. I have written articles for many years for Poodle Review (a USA based magazine with world wide circulation). This has now merged with Poodle Variety and I continue to write for this publication.
